{"id":404,"date":"2022-12-01T13:03:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-01T18:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pittsaldrichassociates.com\/?p=404"},"modified":"2022-12-05T15:17:13","modified_gmt":"2022-12-05T20:17:13","slug":"5-practices-be-present","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pittsaldrichassociates.com\/?p=404","title":{"rendered":"5 Practices:  Be Present"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s impossible to be fully present 100% of the time.\u00a0 We need distractions\u00a0 -if only for a nanosecond to re-energize.\u00a0\u00a0 But today so many seem <em>addicted<\/em> to the distractions.\u00a0 Convinced we can multi-task and be fully effective (we cannot).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-426\" src=\"https:\/\/pittsaldrichassociates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/5practices5-e1670264130477-300x274.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pittsaldrichassociates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/5practices5-e1670264130477-300x274.png 300w, https:\/\/pittsaldrichassociates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/5practices5-e1670264130477-328x300.png 328w, https:\/\/pittsaldrichassociates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/5practices5-e1670264130477.png 442w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Recall those rare moments when you were truly engaged with someone\u00a0 &#8211;a colleague, child, friend, and yes, of course your pet.\u00a0 Something remarkable was occurring during that engagement:\u00a0 a deep connection with indescribable feelings\/sensations; a near &#8220;absence of thought&#8221; in your own brain as you simply absorbed the words or sounds or behaviors of the other.<\/p>\n<p>A Zulu greeting seems to capture the essence of what it means to Be Present.\u00a0 When encountering another person, the greeting is &#8220;Sawu bona&#8221; (I see you).\u00a0 The other responds &#8220;Sikhona&#8221; (I exist).\u00a0 <strong>Until<\/strong> you &#8220;see&#8221; me (<strong>fully<\/strong> take in my being), I do not exist.\u00a0 Ain&#8217;t it the truth:\u00a0 if you&#8217;re not paying attention to me, then I might as well NOT exist, eh?<\/p>\n<p>Imagine!\u00a0 How rich and robust and remarkable our experience would be if we were fully present with each other.\u00a0 And let&#8217;s add presence with Nature as well.\u00a0 (I just breathed deeply with relief as I wrote those words.\u00a0 And glanced skyward to see a prism of rainbow colors reflecting in far away clouds).<\/p>\n<p>By being present we experience the enormous and wondrous power of the moment.\u00a0 And if it&#8217;s a difficult moment, our presence enables us to share the reality with the other (instead of banging heads forcing different realities.)<\/p>\n<p>Here are some quick tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Attune to your body.\u00a0 You &#8220;know&#8221; things in your body 5,000 times faster than your brain can translate.\u00a0 That gut feeling?\u00a0 It&#8217;s signaling the greater truth.<\/li>\n<li>Attend to your body language and tone in presence with others.\u00a0 Body language comprises 50% of communication; tone 43%.\u00a0 Words are worth only 7%.\u00a0 Wow.<\/li>\n<li>Ditch the phone while walking with your child, your friend.\u00a0 A new client\u00a0 &#8211;top tier executive in a large organization&#8211; actually met with me with her phone turned off!\u00a0 &#8220;I never have it on when I&#8217;m talking with another person.&#8221;\u00a0 Another wow.<\/li>\n<li>Listen so intently that you can argue the other person&#8217;s point of view with passion.\u00a0 (Thanks, Nancy Badore, my brilliant mentor.)<\/li>\n<li>Trust that the moment is what it needs to be.\u00a0 Set aside the distractions; they&#8217;ll return if they&#8217;re important, I promise.<\/li>\n<li>Theory U is grounded in the notion of &#8220;presence.&#8221;\u00a0 (See post in Optimizing Human Potential)<\/li>\n<li>Check out Peter Senge et al and the book <em>Presence:\u00a0 Human Purpose and the Field of the Future.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I wonder&#8230;\u00a0 Do accidents (as in mishaps) simply occur out of nowhere, or are they the result of distractions\u00a0 &#8211;not being fully present?\u00a0 Hmmm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s impossible to be fully present 100% of the time.\u00a0 We need distractions\u00a0 -if only for a nanosecond to re-energize.\u00a0\u00a0 But today so many seem addicted to the distractions.\u00a0 Convinced we can multi-task and be fully effective (we cannot).
